Axial pumps (aka propeller pumps) are quite effective for moving large amounts of liquid media under low head. These pumps are predominantly used for rates higher than 500 m3/hour under head of 4…7 m. Axial pumps (as well as centrifugal pumps and screw pumps) are classified as hydraulic blade units.
Axial pumps can operate practically with any liquid media at various temperatures, neutral and aggressive, clean or contaminated by solid or liquid admixtures, providing relatively high capacity while head is not very high. Axial pumps can be easily integrated into any pipeline system due to the flow channel design made as a cylindrical bent pipe. Axial pumps are usually submerged below the discharged liquid medium level to prevent cavitation.
All these advantages provided a background for wide application of axial pumps, especially in chemical industry and in drinking water treatment processes for water recirculation, desalination and backward slime feed. Axial pumps are used in steering mechanisms of ships and in ballast structures for floating docks and icebreakers.
Practical experience demonstrates that axial pumps are especially effective for water circulation processes in various apparatus requiring moderate supply heads.
Similar to another impeller pumps, the major structural elements in axial pumps are the casing and the impeller made as a screw propeller with blades; the impeller is fastened on the casing shaft. For axial pump impellers, the specific speed of impellers may be as high as 1500 rpm. When the impeller rotates, blades mechanically impact the pumped liquid medium, transferring the kinetic energy to it; this energy is converted to the potential energy, resulting in liquid movement in the direction parallel to the impeller axis, with pressure growing due to the diffusion effect.
A special guiding apparatus (a vaned diffuser) spinning the flow is used to impart translational motion to liquid.
In accordance with the method used to fasten blades on an impeller, axial pumps are classified into those with fixed blades and rotary blades. In axial pumps with fixed blades, propeller-type blades are fastened rigidly on the impeller bushing; in axial pumps with rotary blades, the blade tilt variation device is used to control the discharge continuity and, respectively, maintain high efficiency.
A fairing is used to provide smoothness for the delivery of pumped liquids to the impeller blades. A gland is used to prevent operating liquids from infiltration in the area where the impeller protrudes from the shaft casing. A coupling is used to connect the electric motor with the impeller.
Axial pumps are available in vertical or horizontal design version. Usually, these are single-stage pumps, i.e. only one impeller is used.
The major components of axial pumps are the impeller and the tubular chamber in which the impeller rotates. Impeller blades are fastened on a bushing as a curved streamlined wing with its rounded front edge running into the operating liquid flow.
Operating liquid, driven by the lifting force, moves progressively along the chamber in axial direction. The rotating impeller blades mechanically impact the pumping liquid resulting in variation of its speed; as a result, pressure behind the blades drops and pressure over the blades grows. To prevent pumped liquid from swirling by the impeller, the special guiding apparatus is installed upstream from the outlet used for the discharge into the elbow pipe.
In small axial pumps, conical pipes are used to deliver liquid to the impeller. In large pumps, suction pipes having specifically design forms and provided with special chambers are used for this purpose.
A coupling is used to connect an axial pump with the drive directly; a synchronous or asynchronous electric motor is used as a drive.
Two types of axial pumps are available, differing in a method used to fasten blades on an impeller bushing. In one type of pumps, rotary blades are used; in another type, blades are fastened rigidly on the bushing. The pumping unit shaft may be inclined, vertical or horizontal.
The blade pitch angle can be varied within certain limits, resulting in a sufficient range for variation of operating parameters for axial pumps; this, in turn, contributes to maintenance of high efficiency values. For high-capacity axial pumps, the efficiency can be 90% or even higher.
The head produced by modern industrially-made axial pumps is less than that for centrifugal pumps; it varies within 2.5…27 m. However, the discharge is much higher: 0.5…45 m3/s.
